Design Competition for PSA Building
MODULES IN MOTION
The daily movement of containers in, out and around the Singapore Port provided the inspiration for our ‘modules in motion’ concept for the new PSA HQ design tender. The building features a stack of volumes of similar geometry that mimics containers waiting for their next destination. The absence of containers that have reached their destination gives rise to intervening negative spaces, filled by lush landscaping and crossed by natural wind corridors.
Vertical sun-shading fins of different depths are distributed across the façade, resembling the milled surfaces of the containers. A vast injection of landscaped areas at several levels and locations responds to the ‘Work, Learn and Play’ brief, offering a relaxing oasis for occupants and visitors.
Two separated twin lobbies distinguish the office space from the training facilities, offering a naturally cross-ventilated covered piazza. A transparent envelope that wraps the double volumes at the first storey contributes to the floating effect of the upper volumes when seen from afar.
A viewing gallery located in a celebrative double volume at the 11th storey provides a stunning and unobstructed 180-degree view of the port.
