Kranji Green, envisioned as the union of the sustainability and recycling principle, houses various reprocessing activities in a shared use of space on a compact footprint. Situated in Kranji Loop surrounded by industrial hubs, Kranji Green is the “Hub and Spoke recycling center” where waste from the surrounding industries and beyond will be collected and centrally managed. It is designed to recycle more waste on a smaller footprint, whilst having the flexibility of a scalable layout, and requiring minimal resources to operate while generating minimum production waste.
DESIGN FOR ADAPTABILITY
The factory layout provides flexibility in spatial reconfiguration and expansion by locating all fixed elements such as staircase and elevation cores to the least intrusive zone while the offices are elevated to the mezzanine level, creating an unconstraint open plan allowing maximum reconfiguration.
DESIGN FOR DISASSEMBLY
Since the design tender, the building envelope was envisioned in constructional precast panels of modular unit dimension. The choise of materials was driven by the purpose of reusability against custom-made components, or material which are project specific, resulting in the value of remanufacturing or recycling be significantly reduced. The inherent resilience of precast elements fits the goal of long term durability in a coastal environment, addressing the site environmental protections while not tarnishing its “resale” value.
INSIDE-OUT FUNCTION SPACE
With the injection of mezzanine floors, rooftop garden and perimeter planters at facade, the overall landscape concept of an “Eco-Chain” becomes prominent as it is to create a conducive environment of lush greenery and habitat for the communities of man, flora and fauna. Through establishing the interconnected network of greenery and water systems, fauna species will thrive and further enhance the overall ecosystem of the proposed landscape.
