A REVITALISED PASSENGER EXPERIENCE
The ‘Grand Old Dame’ of Changi Airport, Terminal 1, is steeped in national history and pride. Following the construction of Terminal 3 and the refurbishment of Terminal 2, Terminal 1 was ready for its own facelift and upgrading. architects 61 worked in collaboration with design architect Woodhead on a major upgrading effort implemented over 41 months.
The entire retrofitting process was broken down into over 160 contractual phases, each meticulously planned to avoid compromising the airport’s 24/7 operations and security.
The upgraded Terminal 1 now greets visitors with its new iconic ‘Lantern’, an expansive louvered screen that stretches across the entire length of the terminal’s landside façade. Lit at night to glowing effect, it creates much warranted greater visibility for the terminal.
In the departure hall, kinetic ‘Rain’ sculptures inject drama into the internal space while two skylights in the ‘Lantern’ filter daylight deep into the heart of the hall. Other new features include an 11,200 sqm airside extension for an exciting shopping and dining experience, a ‘tropical’ arrival experience at the refurbished baggage belt areas, and a lushly landscaped Central Garden with a runway view.
