A COMPLEMENTARY CONNECTION
The new drop-off canopy is an addition providing sheltered connection between the two existing towers of The Gateway, which was completed in 1990. Its design centred on a seemingly simple but equally challenging brief: the addition must not diminish the qualities of the existing buildings, yet it should have its own distinct presence. The result is a modest, ephemeral, thin silhouette that complements its surroundings.
The presence of the towers’ strong geometry influenced the shape of the canopy, which is supported by eight columns laid out in long spans to minimise both structural and visual disturbance. The canopy is seamlessly integrated by positioning the columns at the location of existing bollards.
From soft reflections of neutral tones during the day, the semi-gloss canopy ceiling hosts an exciting combination of light sources at night: the soft downlight from the canopy, the warm glow of street lights and the intense light from the lobby meet with the lights from cars passing by.
